A two fingers up at unwanted advice

young woman closing her ears with her fingers

Inspired by the various attempts by those “well-meaning” at saddling us mums with advice that actually, we really really don’t want to hear from baby to beyond, here is a cheeky little poem I penned about unwanted advice…

Have you tried that?

I used to do this…

Somebody call the advice police!

While in my head is tumbleweed

As yet another person tries to tell me

What they think is best, yes their way is good

However I couldn’t give a shit really, I hope that’s understood

As my brain sings a little Tra la la theme

As I try to bite my lip, while really I want to scream

But keep it schtum, you don’t want to offend

Fain you interest – it’s best you pretend

Like you give two hoots

About what they profess

Because we all know your way – not their way

Is quite simply – the best

  1. Ha! I’m OK with advice…so far. What bugs me is the hidden judgement ‘advice’. Eg: ‘Oh, my little angel never gets upset because I taught her to do baby sign language’ while my tot is rolling around on the floor screaming because I wouldn’t let him chew the wires.

  2. Ah yes, the advice police. Don’t you just want to hit them over the head with a blunt instrument after first telling them to F off!

  3. There is nothing I can’t stand more than someone handing out unwanted advise. Some people should really mind their own business 🙂 #momsterslink #effitfriday

  4. When I was little, I learned about “backwards compliments” where someone compliments you on the surface but really they are making fun of you. That’s how some advice-givers are. It’s frustrating. “Oh, maybe if you didn’t nurse your baby, they’d sleep through the night better.” Ok, thanks, friend. Great post!!

  5. Love this! totally agree.

Although I just handed out unsolicited advice to my cousin, who just had her second. I did preface it with “sorry for the unsolicited advice…. but” so hopefully she’ll know to ignore me,

I hit send and then face palmed myself for being a pain in the bum!

  6. Hee hee I love it – they just CANNOT HELP THEMSELVES! Honestly I felt like carrying a sign on me saying “Before you say anything, don’t!” for the first 6 months after my first baby!! Thanks for linking up to #KCACOLS lovely. Mim x

  7. Yes you are right!! How many times I just wanted to say f… off!! If you know what I mean!! Why people always have to get involved!! I guess some advice is okay but most the times you just want them to go away and just let you make your own mistakes as that is the only way to learn!! Great post! Thanks so much for joining us at #KCACOLS. As you know I love having you here. I hope you can join me again on Sunday!! 🙂 xx
