2020 has been a tough year for so many families. Even those that have been lucky enough to have no one suffer from COVID-19 have struggled with lockdowns, quarantines, and disruption to work and education. Immediate families have found themselves pushed together for a lot longer than usual. While at the same time not being able to see extended family members for long periods. Of course, all of these challenges have made keeping your family emotionally close, something of a challenge. Although there are some tactics that can help with nurturing positive family relationships. Keep reading to find out what they are.
Plan fun activities to do together
First of all, you can nurture positive family relationships by planning fun activities that everyone can get involved in. Of course, with lockdowns, this isn’t as easy as it once was. After all, unless the area you live in is in the correct tier, you can’t pop out for a nice family dinner at Pizza Express or a trip to the Cinema.
Happily, there are still activities you can do as a family group, despite the lockdown restrictions. The first of these is to organise a family game night. Indeed, you can buy a board game and get family members that live in the same house to play together. You can even organise a game night with extended family members over Skype or Zoom. In particular, games like Pictionary work best for this.
Alternatively, instead of heading to the Cinema, why not run a movie marathon in your very own home? Supply buckets of popcorn and blankets every one can snuggle under for extra fun! You can even use Zoom to share the experience with those in a household other than yours.
Encourage extended family to live closer to you
You can also help nurture positive family relationships byb encouraging the extended family to move closer to where you live. Whether you will interact with them or not will depend on the regulations currently in place and the tier you are in. However, having them geographically closer makes it’s much easier to get together and do socially distanced activities when the opportunity arises.
For some people, this will mean encouraging extended family members to move from locations across the UK. For others, it will involve the process of achieving full UK citizenship, something that getting leave to remain UK status is an essential part of. Indeed once your relatives have left to remain status, they will be able to live anywhere in the UK free from immigration control.
Respect all family members need for space
Finally, to keep your family emotionally close right now you can nurture positive family relationships by understanding and respecting each member’s need for personal space. Yes, it may sound counter-intuitive.
However, depending on their personality types, some people will need more space than others to process their experiences and emotions. With that in mind, be sure not to enforce too much family time on any member, and make sure everyone has a space they can’t recreate for some quiet alone time.
