Parenting while sick – possible or not?

parenting while sick

“When I get sick, who cares for the children?” is maybe the most frequently asked question among parents. Dear parents, do not despair – there are solutions to parenting while sick.

When kids get sick, you will look after them, but as for parenting while sick, you have to take care of yourself and also your children. A therapeutic day in bed might seem only a fantasy when you have so much on your plate, but trust us, if you are patient with yourself and your kids, you will be able to muddle through. Besides, you are not alone in this situation – there are people in your support network who will unconditionally support you, your husband or wife, relatives or friends. And in the worst case, you can contact a babysitter!

Your child’s age is crucial in this sense. You cannot tell a one- or two-year-old, for example, that you are sick because they will not understand. But as they advance in age, you will see that they are more reasonable. However, a few tactics may work no matter the children’s age, so keep reading to discover what it is all about.

Relax the screen time rules a bit

As an attentive parent, it is normal to be preoccupied with how much time your child spends in front of the television, smartphone, tablet, or other gadgets. We know, we know – the blue light is a real danger for the eyes of the little ones (and not only), but as you do not feel well, it would be wise to relax the screen time rules a little. Sometimes, this is the only thing you can do to look for your baby or toddler without too much one-on-one contact. It is also helpful to protect your child from the same infection that has taken control of your immune system. Thus, consider washing hands and using some screen cleaner every time you use their tablet to set a game up. And do not be worried – no one will judge you for being less authoritative on this screen time matter.

Minimise infection

It is hard to keep up with the rhythm of life, particularly when you are feeling unwell. Not to mention that you also have to look after your children – this amalgam of emotions can turn into a nightmare in seconds if not adequately managed. You must avoid passing the infection to your children if you have a cold or flu. We know that this is the last thing you want, but viruses travel so fast that they can also take control over other people in the house’s immune system.

Sometimes, the best prevention is to use a hand sanitiser and wash your hands every time you interact with objects of your kids and use your own glasses, plates, cutlery, and cups. It might also be helpful to take lunch (or breakfast/dinner) at a different time so as not to expose your children to infection. And do not forget to always let air circulate by frequently opening the windows.

Special healthcare and hospitalisations

However, if your health condition is not about the simple flu and you need, let us say, special healthcare or hospitalisation, you need to let your kids in someone else’s care, be they your partner or a caretaker/babysitter. Sometimes, it is not even the internal factors causing such an unpleasant situation.

You might have been the victim of someone else’s negligence in a work or road accident or even a medical malpractice victim. In this case, your time has to be divided wisely between medical recovery, child care, and legal proceedings. In the last case, ensure you work with a personal injury lawyer who will help you take the proper steps to do yourself justice. You can also use a compensation calculator like ConpensationCalculatorUk.co.uk to have a clearer idea of the amount of money you can receive as compensation, based on the injury’s place, severity, injury time, age, and more.

Conserve your energy

When you are feeling unwell, it would be better just to do nothing, but when you have kids, this is not always possible. In this case, we advise you to conserve energy to have time for yourself and your little ones. If you have a baby, for example, consider dressing them in more absorbent diapers to avoid changing the diapers too often.

It would also be wise to have all the things you need during the day in one place so as not to be forced to search for them in a hundred different places. Thus, everything from wipes and diapers to water bottles and snack baskets should be in your visual field. We know these recommendations may be too obvious, but you would be surprised how common it is for parents to lose energy and motivation on these simple things when feeling ill.

Read kids a story, or put on an audio storybook

Apart from letting your kids enjoy the TV time a little more, you can also entertain them with a good story. You can find a broad range of stories for all ages, so choosing one that suits your little one’s preferences should not be hard. Educational books are also great for teaching your child valuable information, and do you know what is cool? You do so while resting and reading, you’re also working on your recovery.

If you are not a good storyteller, also consider an audio storybook. Let the Internet be your source of inspiration, at least this time so that you can take proper care of both yourself and your little one.

Get creative

It is challenging to balance your recovery with child care; that is why you sometimes need to improvise. Thus, let us be creative! Think about activities your kids might enjoy and keep them busy so that you can supervise them in peace from the sofa. You should have a list of activities and games specially made for sick days, and if you are running out of ideas, ask your partner, relatives, or friends. If each individual comes up with an idea, your kids will probably be busy for more than a day or two.
