Sometimes as a mum, the notion of “looking good” can feel like a far-flung hope. With no time, no energy and sometimes no idea where to start you might be wondering whether looking more “put together” is even achievable. But with some little tips and tricks, it IS possible. Today we have Karen J. Gerrard – Founder of SEAMS Couturiers Hand Cream to share her cost-effective and quick beauty tips for busy mums.

There’s never a minute to spare in the day for mums, we are usually juggling a hand full of jobs at once and skincare gets left to the bottom of the list, but looking after your skin doesn’t have to take up much time here are my beauty tips for busy mums – think multi-tasking skincare with quick results:
In the shower
- Keep your cleansers, exfoliator and a foot file, in the shower ready to use at the same time you are bathing.
- Wash off products are best they take a couple of minutes to use and a splash of water on the face gets the blood flowing to the surface and helps brighten the complexion.
- A facial wash is best in the morning whilst at night a deeper cleanse is better I love Liz Earl Cleanse and Polish, just before you get into the shower massage some cream into your face and then wipe off with the wet muslin cloth supplied or a flannel.
Let’s talk creams
- As we reach the age of 30 our skin looses 1% collagen and elastin each year and fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. Taking a few extra minutes to moisturise your skin will have long term benefits and keep skin looking younger.
- In the morning use a cream with an SPF even if it’s not sunny outside an SPF will help protect from the elements try Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream with SPF 30.
- At night add a serum in under your night cream, try Neils Yard Organic Frankincense Intense Lift Cream and Serum they come in a mini kit if you want to try it first.
Exfoliate!
- Exfoliate once a week to take away dead skin cells and smooth skin. Products will absorb quicker and be more effective. Pixi Glow do a gentle Exfoliating Tonic that soothes and renews skin.
- Rub in a foot exfoliator such as palmers Foot Magic Scrub wash off then buff with Scholl Dual Action Foot File and Hard Skin remover. Follow up with School Cracked Heel Repair Cream Active Repair K+.
In the bath
- If you do have time for a bath pour in some Weleda Lavender Bath Milk to help relax the mind and moisturise your skin whilst you soak.
- Epsom salts are a quick and cost effective way to relieve aches and pains and can be added at the same time, be sure to keep the water temperature warm as hot water can dry the skin.
Keeping things moisturized & conditioned
- Use a body oil with a spray dispense its quickest to apply, but if you have sensitive skin, a lotion is better, E45 Daily Lotion spray 200 ml and it absorbs quickly. You could also try Aveeno Daily Moisturising Body Lotion 300ml in a large pump bottle. Whatever you use apply onto damp skin to help lock in moisture.
- Keeping your hair well-conditioned will save time in the long run as brushing becomes easier and you will avoid those bad hair days. I was recently recommended L’Oreal Extreme Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner enriched with Keratin it keeps long hair soft, smooth and manageable find it in Superdrug for £2.47!
- With all the sanitising, hands are now dryer than ever, so keep a tube of hand cream next to the kitchen sink and one in the car. There’s always a time in the car when you are waiting for the kids, when leaving the house or at school pick up. SEAMS Couturiers Hand Cream absorbs instantly and isn’t greasy so you can use it whilst on the run. It has the added benefits of Shea Butter and a Biomimetic Lipid Complex that helps to lock in moisture. It’s great on the feet and elbows too!
It’s about lifestyle too
- Sleepless nights, early mornings can leave eyes looking worse for wear to help take away puffy eyes gently pat a drop of The Body Shop Vitamin E Eye Cream morning and night or for a real treat use Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Recovery Complex II with Hyaluronic Acid to instantly add radiance and see a younger-looking skin within four weeks. They eye area is very sensitive so when using a new product test on a small area near the eye fist to check for allergic reactions.
- Eat a healthy breakfast, the most important meal of the day, it’s no good to be running on empty! Have a slow-release food such as oatmeal. Avocados are a great source of vitamin E and eggs will help nourish and provides vitamin C for skin repair.
- Snack during the day on brazil nuts they contain powerful antioxidants and studies have shown they can help clear the skin as they contain selenium
- Drink water all day long to hydrate from inside as well as out. If you pinch the skin on the top of your hand and it doesn’t immediately bounce back then you could be dehydrated.

Lots of great tips!
I love it! I have three kids, and I learned early that the only place I would have to do any skincare would be in the shower. LOL.
I love all these tips, probably would follow putting everything round the bathtub so you can just use it whilst relaxing. I also like the tip about the spray moisturiser caus ei have sensitive skin and do find most moisturisers can irritate it, so would definitely try a spray instead! Thank you so much for sharing.

Lots of great tips here! I like the health breakfast tip, it’s given me a bit of a nudge. I’ve been relying too much on cereal lately.
I never thought of wearing facial cream with an SPF even when staying indoors. That’s actually an awesome tip!

I should try to drink more water as I know of all the health benefits but just don’t
I always say I’m going to exfoliate & even have some products but only remember to do it about once every 3 months! I really need to get into a regular routine.
I love s good hand cream expecially in my hand bag and at the minute it’s vital with washing them all the time
Great tips. I’m happy to say I already do most of them.
The Keeping things moisturized & conditioned was my favourite part
I don’t wear a ton of make up. The last few weeks, I’ve been dealing with a major acne breakout from wearing my mask and the usual hormone fluctuations that cause it. I keep my routine simple. I use a face wash that gently exfoliates and just added a toner.
I am definitely a busy mom, so these are right up my alley! I can’t wait to try these tips and products!
Using a serum under your night cream is a good idea for extra help with wrinkles
I would love to try the In the bath tip because it sounds lovely and relaxing.
They’re easy to follow. I’m going to try the brazil nuts!
I’ll start using a cream with an SPF as my skin is starting to look old!
Not a mom but loved every tips that you’ve mentioned especially the bath one! Definitely going to try it!
I recently bought a tube squeezer, like a giant key that you would find on a tin of sardines that you wind round, it then squeezes every last drop of cream from tubes making sure you don’t waste any getting every last drop!
How I relax, It goes a little something like this, the evening to myself, the house is fairly clean, clean bedding, a pamper shower (a shower where I shave myself and exfoliate!), moisturize, clean PJ’s, a takeaway, diet cola, movie of my choice! WOW !
I think the best tip is actually using the aveeno, I swear by it. I was giving it by the hospital for my super dry skin and it works a treat. My little one has the baby one too.
Lots of great tips. I shall have to try the bath milk which sounds lovely.
Loads of great tips! I’m 33 and never really used face creams, but after reading this I might start, time to go shopping!
The tips I will try is “Taking a few extra minutes to moisturise your skin will have long term benefits and keep skin looking younger.” as my skin is starting to show it’s age.
Taking a few extra minutes to moisturise your skin will have long term benefits and keep skin looking younger. I always forget to mouaturise my hands and feet as looking after young children and I really should start.
I’d love to try the Weleda Lavender Bath Milk cos it’s quick and easy to do if you’re having a bath anyway, and just the name makes me feel relaxed!
I love the idea of keeping my foot file and exfoliator in the bathroom – terrific tip.
Dry brush legs with a simple exfoliating sponge (the sort you can get in a 3 pack from poundland) it helps combat cellulite, and it means you are moisturising good skin (not dead skin)
I’d love to try Palmers Magic Foot Scrub as I do a lot of walking my feet would benefit from a product that removes dead skin
The Epsom salts added to the bath to relieve aches and pains. Never thought of using these for myself even though we do have some that we use for bathing our hens bottoms when they have trouble laying!
I would love the Epsom salts as I have kidney stones and this would relieve some pain xxx
Would like to try Liz Earl Cleanse and Polish to see if helps my skin

I definately need to try a serum! Feeling my age today (21!!! ha ha)
To be honest I never eat breakfast but I really think it’s something that I will start doing
Thanks for the information, and links. Aveeno seen today be an effective brand. Whilst Foot Magic Scrub seems would a try :- Given the amount of time we are on out feet, etc. Some foot care, treatments, etc seem necessary and likely to become beneficial. Weldeda bath milk with lavender sounds good, and relaxing. Shampoos and conditioner for long hair, seems another worthwhile product to try (2 in 1 product effective and time saving/convenient).
Moisturising is so necessary, especially in Autumn/ Winter, and as we age/ mature.
i could really do with looking after my skin better! thanks for this article x
