How to make your garden look nice in winter

As the days grow shorter and the temperature starts to drop, you probably find yourself wondering how to make your garden look nice in winter. If you are anything like me, recently you may have peered out of the window to your garden and found it to look rather bleak.

So what can you do to make your garden look nice in winter and less depressing than it currently probably does? While it may seem like a difficult task, there are several things you can do to spruce up your garden, and make your garden look nice in winter, even when the weather is cold.

Add Some Christmas Decorations

Christmas decorations can add a touch of holiday cheer to your garden, and they can also make your garden look nicer in winter. There are many different types of Christmas decorations you can use, so choose the ones that best match your style. 

You can go with traditional ornaments like lights and wreaths, or you can opt for more unusual decorations like snow globes or inflatable snowmen.

Plant Some Frost-Tolerant Flowers

Some flowers are better suited to colder weather than others, which means they can stay outside all year long (including winter). 

These types of flowers tend to be referred to as “frost tolerant,” and there are many different varieties to choose from. 

If you’re looking for something colourful, try planting pansies or daisies. If you’re going for a more natural look, consider planting some ivy or holly.

Add Some Winter-Themed Statues

Statues are a great way to add visual interest to your garden and give it a haven-like feel, and there are many different winter-themed statues you can use to decorate your garden. 

For example, you might want to put up a Santa Claus statue or a snowman. 

Just be sure to choose something that has meaning for the people in your home to remind them of happy memories as they look at it outside during the winter months.

Use Winter-Themed Container Plants

Container plants are a great way to add colour and life to your garden, even in winter. If you want to go with a winter theme, you can use many different plants. 

For example, you could plant some evergreen plants like holly or ivy, or you could plant some winter-blooming flowers like poinsettias. Put down some grey and white rock and gravel underneath your containers, as this adds an extra special bit of contrast between bright reds and greens and the ground below.

Add Some Outdoor Lights

Outdoor lights are a great way to highlight specific areas of your garden during the winter, and you can also use them to create beautiful light displays for parties or other special occasions. 

If you want something simple, choose lights that match the colour scheme of your home. If you have a more elaborate display, consider using lights that change colour or stay on for a timed period. Personally, I think that fairy lights are the perfect way of adding instant cheer and are an easy way to make your garden look nice in winter. Switch up your garden furniture

If your old garden furniture is starting to look a bit rusty and tired, then why not elevate how your garden looks with some luxury rattan furniture?

Although winter may not seem like the obvious time to change up your garden furniture, the great news is that you can leave rattan furniture outside in winter. With the addition of a patio heater, some rugs, and a fire pit, you could even have a winter garden party to christen it!

We recently invested in an awning to help us get outside and make use of our garden over winter and it was one of the best things we did this year around the home and garden. You could even consider installing a retractable roof.

Clean Your Pots and Planters

Cleaning your pots and planters can be a tedious task, but it’s well worth the effort when you consider how much nicer your garden will look once they’re clean. 

Scrub down each pot using warm water and dish soap to get started. Once they’re dry, coat them in a layer of clear shellac to protect them from winter weather.

Upgrade Your Gardening Tools

For the best results, you should upgrade your gardening tools to ones that are particularly suited for winter. 

For example, if you usually use hand pruners in your garden, consider getting a pair of loppers instead. 

A steel rake will work better than a plastic one during winter months, and wear some waterproof boots before you head outside to the garden.

Mulch Your Flower Beds

Mulching your flower beds is a great way to protect them from the cold weather, and it’s also an excellent way to keep them looking neat and tidy. 

To mulch your flower beds, spread a layer of bark, straw, or leaves over the top of them. This will add a bit of protection from the cold and keep your plants healthy.

Clean Up Fallen Leaves

Fallen leaves can do a lot of damage to your garden during winter, so it’s essential to clean them up when they start to fall off trees and bushes. 

To get started, you should rake up all leaves on the ground and put them in trash bags so they won’t blow around during winter storms.

Check Your Outdoor Hoses for Any Leaks

Outdoor hoses are an essential part of your garden, but you should still check them regularly to ensure there aren’t any leaks or cracks that could cause problems later on. 

To check your hoses, look for any signs of cracking, leaks, or kinks. Make sure to move the hose around while you’re checking it so that you can inspect all sides of it.
